As I’ve gotten older though, I have picked up more introverted qualities. I find it takes me longer to recharge and have my alone time before I can go out and be my social butterfly self again.

Wonder what social life was like before the labels introvert and extrovert got thrown around.

Candide,

I don’t know, but I’m guessing back then there was less pressure for people to be outrageously social and it was OK to be a bit more low-key. The atomization of society between movement of people and technology has stripped socializing to baser imperatives – who can get me ahead, get me into the club or whatever, or get me off.

As I understand it (and I am openly biased), the Introversey is a reaction against the ever-growing chorus of advice telling people to be more social and gregarious as a solution to their life and career problems – all the emphasis on “networking” and “management by walking around” and how we should make technology more of a “social profession” (incidentally, partly because they think that will get more women into it).
